Shortly after the desktop loads the machine (running XP
Pro) displays a message box, supposedly from Windows,
that says the machine "contains adult related material,
do I want to search for it?" I know this machine has some
junk loaded on it, and I am trying to get rid of it. Is
the displayed message a legitimate Windows message? If it
is, does the search really work? If it isn't a legitimate
message, does anyone know the probable generator of it?
Thanks.

Check for an application called PowerScan located on your
machine. I had a buddy who had the same issue and he
removed PowerScan and everything was fine. You might also
wanna try Ad-Aware from LavaSoft, which gets rid of most
spyware. Another good one is SpyBot: Search and Destroy.

Hope this helps!

To see what programs are starting up when you boot up, go to Start > Run
and type msconfig <enter>
Go to the startup tab. You can prevent programs from starting by
setting the checkbox accordingly.

Install and run:

(1) a firewall (e.g. ZoneAlarm from http://www.zonelabs.com/) -- or at
the very least turn on the built-in "Internet Connection Firewall"

(2) an antivirus program updated with the latest virus definitions

(3) Ad-Aware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ also updated with its
latest reference file

(4) Spybot Search & Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org/ also
updated with its latest reference file

all of the above can be done for free, although you get various
enhancements if you pay for more elaborate versions.
