I have a user that has no problems opening a contact in an address book.
But if they use the 'search' tool to find the contact and they click it,
they are told they cannot access this item. I have tried re-installing and
no change.

Hi,

As this problem may caused by many reasons, could you please collect some
information for me first?

* Information Collection
=================

1. What is the version of your Windows? Have you applied all the latest
updates?
2. What do you mean "use the search tool", do you type the contact name in
the "Find a Contact" box or do you use an add-on to do this?
3. How do you create this Address Book? Where is the address book file
location?
3. Please take a screenshot on the exact error message and attach it
directly to the newsgroup or send it to <[email protected]>
** To take a screenshot
---------------------
1. When this error message appears, press PrScrn key on your keyboard.
2. Type "mspaint" (without the quotation marks) in Start>Run box and click
OK.
3. Click Edit>Paste to paste the screenshot.
4. Save it as JPEG file type and send it as Email attachment.
---------------------

Meanwhile, you can try this:

Test in Outlook Safe Mode
===================

Outlook Safe Mode can narrow down issues which are caused by any
extensions, corrupted resources, files, registries, or templates.

1. Click Start | Run.
2. In the Open box, type: "Outlook /safe" (without the quotation marks)
Notes: There is a space character between Outlook and the forward slash (/).
3. Click OK.

Create a new profile
===============

If this issue persists, I suggest that we create a new Outlook profile. A
new profile is a new environment for us to use Outlook. To create a new
profile is only for a test to see if the problem is related to the corrupt
profile of Outlook. Creating a new profile will not do any damage to the
old profile. Please refer to the following article to create a new profile
in Outlook.

Thanks for all this help. Here are the answers to your questions. I will have
the user get me a screen shot asap.
If you have any ideas as to what is causing this it would be a big help.
Just to reemphasize. The user is able to open the contacts up by selecting
them manually. It is only when they use the search feature -"Type a contact
to Find" - that this problem occurs.
1. What is the version of your Windows? Have you applied all the latest
updates? XP SP2 patched both office and windows
2. What do you mean "use the search tool", do you type the contact name in
the "Find a Contact" box or do you use an add-on to do this? the "Find contact" box. there are no 3rd party add ons
3. How do you create this Address Book? Where is the address book file
location? the address book is the default book created with an exchange account.
3. Please take a screenshot on the exact error message and attach it
directly to the newsgroup or send it to <[email protected]>

Hi,

We have not received any similar posts regarding this issue. Have you tried
the two tests as we discussed before?

For your convenience, I have pasted them below:

Test in Outlook Safe Mode
===================

Outlook Safe Mode can narrow down issues which are caused by any
extensions, corrupted resources, files, registries, or templates.

1. Click Start | Run.
2. In the Open box, type: "Outlook /safe" (without the quotation marks)

If you do, then please tell me the test results.

Meanwhile, I have searched a lot, and found some suggestions that you may
want to try:

* Suggestion 1: Make sure the contacts folder is for use with the Address
Book
================

1. In the Folder List, click to select the folder you would like to use
with the Address Book. If you do not see the Folder List, click Folder List
on the View menu.
2. On the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Properties for <your
folder name>.
3. On the Outlook Address Book tab, click to select "Show this folder as an
e-mail address book", type a descriptive name, and then click OK.

* Suggestion 2: Reinstall the Outlook Address Book Service
===============

If issue persists, I would like to suggest that we reinstall the Outlook
address book. To do so, please follow the steps below.

1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
2. Click to select "View or change existing directories or address books",
and then click Next.
3. If your Outlook Address Book is listed, click Remove, and then exit
Outlook. Reopen it to add the "Outlook address book" as follows.
4. If your Outlook Address Book is not listed, click Add.
5. Click to select "Additional Address Books", and then click Next.
6. Click to select Outlook Address Book, and then click Next.
7. Click OK when you receive the prompt that the address book you added
will not start until you click Exit from the File menu.
8. Click Finish.
9. Click Exit from the File menu, and then restart Outlook.

Test if this issue is resolved. If you have any questions, please feel free
to let me know.
