Search Engines-Google, Lycos, Alta Vista and yahoo

M

Mark Riley

For some reason I am suddenly unable to access google or
other search engines yet I can access ANY other web site
as usual! All I get is the usual page unavailable message.

I am using a wireless broadband connection which I have
reinstalled to try and fix the problem. I also have zone
alarm installed and I wondered if this was causing any
trouble. However I shut down Zone Alarm which made no
difference!

Any suggestions what is wrong?

This has only occurred in the last 2 days.

Thanks,

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Your system might be affected by the recent Qhosts Trojan.

This Trojan Horse that will modify the TCP/IP settings to point to a
different DNS server. Blocks many search engines.

Trojan.Qhosts Removal Tool
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.qhosts.remova
l.tool.html

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/trojan.qhosts.html

==
Open the HOSTS file and delete all mappings except:
127.0.0.1 localhost

The file is located at
"C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc" (named "HOSTS")

Backup the current HOSTS file first.

==
Reset TCP/IP.

Click Start | Run | Cmd
type "netsh int ip reset changes.txt"

==
Run WinsockXPFix.exe.

==
To prevent this from happening:

Install hotfix 828750 which fixes the vulnerability:
