Search Companion

So if you turned the Search companion off, HOW do you turn
it back on???

If you turned him off using the menu selections in Search: At the bottom of
the left hand search column, click on "Change Preferences." Then select
"with an animated character."

That's part of the problem. The "Change Preference" option
does not show in the left hand search column, just the
usual parameters for configuring your search.

Is there another place to change these settings?

Once you switch to the classic search view, there is no "Change Preferences" selection anymore. You have to click the Customize button in the classic view to select to use the Search Companion view. Once you change the view mode, you'll have to exit IE and reload to effect the change.

I hate to sound like a dummy. But where is the Customize
button? I've looked in Windows Explorer and IE, but I'm
not seeing a Customize button.

Hmm. I'm over in Start> Search and you're over in Internet Explorer. Two
different searches. At least it's not the messenger triad: msn, windows and
service.

Before I forget, thanks for all your help. I've looked at
Start, Search (which is just search in a Windows Explorer
Shell) and Internet Explorer. Neither provides me a
Customize button. Approximately where is it? On the
toolbar, on the left hand column,???

The Change Preference button would appear right underneath the option to
configure search. If you are not seeing it, look for a scroll bar in that
column or enlarge the window.

PS: I use the classic settings for internet search but not in Start>
Search. Are you using classic search for that? What did you use to change
that? If a third party program was used (TweakUI for example), that's where
this needs to be reversed.

For everyday file work, I use File Locator Pro - big brother to Agent
Ransack (www.mythicsoft.com)

One of these days MS will learn to put all adjustments in the same logical
place.
Start>Control Panel>Nadger up Your Computer...

Open IE. Click the Search toolbar button or use View -> Explorer bar -> Search. Look at the top right corner of the leftside pane that just opened for Search. There should be a Customize menu up there (to the right of the "New" and "Next" menus).

If you still can't find it, download and use the TweakUI Power Toy for Windows XP. Look under the Explorer node in the tree to find the options for classic view for search (one is for Explorer, the other is for Internet Explorer).
