Search button on Start menu does not work

When i click the Search button under the Start menu, my
computer hits 100% utilization and the Explorer Bar at
the bottom of the screen freezes. I looked at Task
Manager and can see the file "explorer.exe" is at 100%
utilization. I thought reinstalling Windows XP might
help, but it did not do anything to remedy this problem.
I can still search by going through My Computer, just not
using the Search button in the Start menu. Can anyone
help?
