search and download music

I've been asked if there is a program that will help search the web for
music that you can legally download. I told them not to use kazaa but is
there anything else?

I've been asked if there is a program that will help search the web for

One way to download music legally is to find the artists record company,
use a web browser and google.
The record company often let people download one or two songs from an album
for free, hoping they will like it so much that they buy the whole album.

For an artist who has recorded several albums this means you can download a
number of songs, usually in the mp3 format, and use them in your mp3
player.

If you are not looking for a specific artist you can search on the genre
you like, and find loads of more or less known artists who play such music,
and you will find lots of free mp3:s

I was surprised a few years ago when I searched for information about, and
music of, certain Latin american artists which are not known by many
outside latin america. I found many songs with my favorite artists and many
more I didn't know about before.

Later I searched for fairly unknown blues guitarists and found mp3s from
them too.

So there is no problem to find enormous amounts of music to download
legally for free on the web, whatever strange musical taste you have.
Less known artists are even more generous than the famous ones, because
they want to become known. So if you are happy with music in a certain
genre performed and composed by relatively unknown artists there is even
more music available for free.

It can be a problem though, if you want a certain well known song by a
certain well known artist. Such songs are often the ones the record
companies use to sell records, so you might not find that special world hit
by a world famous artist available for free.

I don't know of any searchbots that specifically search for free music.
Generally, you have to do a Google search (or equivalent) on something like
"Free music" and then go to those sites and see if they have anything you
want.

On the other hand, iTunes from Apple and MusicMatch Jukebox offer free
downloads of their programs that allow you to sample the music for free and
purchase a song for 99 cents (US). both have their own strengths and
weaknesses, so you should try them out. Napster software is free but it
requires a monthly subscription fee as well as a fee for each song. I think
Apple and MMJB offer a better value overall than Napster even though Napster
claims to have more music in their database.

As much as I rail against Musicmatch Jukebox (it can be frustrating at
times), I selected it as my download music source. Primarily because it is
an excellent music organizer, and it works with most any MP3 player while
the itunes software will work only with your PC and an Apple player. Also
the copy privileges at MMJB are a tad more liberal than Apples (not much,
but a bit more liberal), and MMJB has free streaming radio stations that
allow you to buy the songs you hear. You can also subscribe to an enhanced
streaming radio service with extra convenience.

All in all, I like being able to buy music this way, it has reawakened my
interest in music, and I have bought more music in 3 months than I have in 5
years.

It doesn't work. I tried first with "latin", no hits at all.
I tried "blues", no hits. I tried "country", one link.

It works a lot better to use google with a suitable set of search words,
like, mp3 country music, etc..

Search for the kind of music and/or artists you like on the web, and you
will find lots of free mp3:s to download legally and for free.
But you will have to surf the web a little to find them, they are not
immediately available in long download lists.

If you want the latest hits by the most famous artists you can use the
radio stations on the web and record the music they play.
This is just as legal as recording from non-web radio stations using a tape
recorder or a computer.
The program you need to record streaming music is available as freeware. I
think svrecorder is one such program which was mentioned in acf a few days
ago.
(For this to work really well you need a fast modem or cable internet)

I got hits entering "latin free mp3" but most of the sites were gone.
Probably scared off by the Recording Indusrty.
Your way to go would be much faster. Sorry couldn't help :(
