My search button now takes me to some obscure search
engine and the config button is inoperative now. How do I
reset it to bring up the default searches that were
available when I first installed ie 6?

Internet Options control panel (Tools=>Internet Options), on the Programs
tab, press the Reset Web Settings button.
or if its there select the Tools=>Reset Web Settings menu option from
Internet Explorer.
