SD Cards

Hi,

Vista Home Premium SP1

I know this probably isn't the correct newsgroup for this question, but here
goes.

How do you use an SD Card?

I have just bought a new one and used it in a camera. The camera confirms
that there are saved photos on the card but when I connect it to the SD slot
on the computer nothing seems to happen. I do notice a green light appears
next to the slot on the computer as if it is reading something, but, having
left it for 10 mins, nothing else has happened.

Thanks,
David

It should show up as a drive in "My Computer"

Thanks for replying.

Can't see it in there... With the 'My Computer' window open the screen does
momentarily flicker as if it wants to do something when I insert the card
into the slot, but that's all it does. The card is a Transcend 2GB.

Oh. If you have access to another computer with an sd card slot you can
try it in there to test. Or maybe you can leave it in the camera
connect then camera to the computer with a usb cable? Hmm or right
click My Computer and choose "Manage" then go to "storage> disk
management" just to see if it shows up in there. Sorry maybe someone
else can help further.

if it's an SDHC card your card reader may be too old to read it. I have the
same problem so I bought a USB SDHC reader online for about $5

First question: is an SD card or is it an SDHC card? The SDHC is higher
capacity and conforms to a different standard. You should be able to use
an SD card in an SDHC appliance, but not the other way around.

One possible scenario: your SD slot is only SD compliant and you've
inserted an SDHC card - won't work.

It seems that the angle at which I put the card in the slot is the trick to
this one. If I angle the card slightly to the left when inserting it, it
opens the drive no problem. If it goes in straight, it won't register.

Thanks,
David

Hah! Glad you figured out the problem :)

Do you have to turn the "secure" switch off ?

It doesn't seem to make any difference whether it's locked or not. It just
seems to need a little 'jiggle' as it is inserted. (No laughing at the
back!) I can only assume it's a dodgy card I got.

Just as you would any drive. Right click, choose Format...

Generally they come formatted. Elsewise format as you would any disk
drive - at least I have done that on Linux.

The advice generally given in photgraphic groups is to format in the
camera before using it there.
