SD Card Transcend

My emachines seems to recognize only 1GB of 4GB of memory on my new Transcend
secure digital card. Windows reports it was unformated, only 989 MB of
memory. I Formatted it but still only 1GB of memory. I downloaded
Transcend's memory size correction program but it returns an error saying the
memory size is correct and won't change it. I am not sure what I need to do
to correct windows SD card memory size recognition. Any advice?

Check with EMachines on what is the maximum size of SD card that their
reader will recognize.

I did, they have no answer. The technician said that since I had another,
1GB, card that worked so there was no problem with the laptop. I couldn't
convince him that the fact only 1GB of a 4GB card is indeed a problem, at
least for someone who needs the other 3GB of storage.

The cards are so new that it's probably more likely that it's the reader,
rather than the card itself. If you have a friend with a card reader, ask
them to try it in their reader and see how bit it thinks it is.

I tried it on another system using an external card reader and got 4GB, but I
need to figure out how get my eMachine (and Treo 650) to read it correctly
since they are the reason I purchased it.

It may be that the card reader in the EMachines will never read it correctly
without some kind of firmware update (if that's even possible)... if might
be that you have to dump the card reader and get a new one. I know it's
part of the front of the case... but there are third party readers that may
replace it if it is essential to get it working.

Check with Palm for the Treo capability. It might be easier to exchange the
4gb card for 2 x 2gb ones. Early PocketPCs didn't read any card over 256mb.
Thankfully my Viewsonic V37 seems to have no trouble with 1gb cards, but I
don't think I'll try higher... for now. Not for the PocketPC anyway, maybe
for the digital camera I might.

I plugged in an external card reader into my eMachine laptop through USB and
it does read and allow format to 4GB, but the built in one still say 1GB.
Emachines wanted me to uninstall/reinstall my drivers, but that seems
pointless to me as it seems the guy felt he had to recommend something after
I refused to believe 1GB for a 4GB card was "normal function". With regard
to my phone, I contacted Palm, they say they haven't tested a 4GB and cannot
confirm compatibility with my Treo 650 but that a Treo 650 was compatible
with Fat12, 16 and 32 as I recall. When I reformatted the card to 4GB
externally the Treo still only recoginzed 2GB. Then I reformatted it to
fat16 and put it in my Treo it said unknown file system and it wanted to
reformat it and still only recognized 2GB. My Nikon coolpix 5900 refuses the
card no matter what I do (the coolpix has been updated to the latest firmware
1.2). I can't figure out what the common factor is or how to fix all these,
but two 2 GB cards would have cost me less than half this 4GB at newegg.

Oh isn't brand new technology wonderful. The rest of the world will no
doubt catch up eventually.... but NewEgg are good at RMA so if you value
your sanity (and your phone bill) it might be better to send it back and get
the 2 x 2gb ones.
