Scroll Bar problem IE6 SP1

B

B. Arnold

After installing SP1, my scroll bars act funny. a click
on the arrow scrolls twice as far, and (much more
annoyingly) a click on the scroll bar itself scrolls me
TWO screens instead of one.

Incidentally, I was hoping for a fix of a problem that
showed up last time i installed a SP: the status bar
won't stay on, and i have to turn it on over and over.

How can fixing security break this stuff?!?

Anyway, fixes??

If you click right under the indicator on the scrollbar it only goes one
page.

An interesting observation: The bug apparently does not appear if

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"

is at the beginning of the HTML code.

Just a guess, but they probably use a special rendering Engine when
they see that particular doctype. The default would be the original
HTML 1.0 engine that they licensed from Spyglass. With all those
revisions and their lousy regression testing, small wonder it's buggy.
But XHTML is a kind of XML, and thus easy to parse, so presumably
somebody decided to start from scratch, rather than adapt the old
engine.

MS is now aware of this bug in Q824145.

Three questions: (1) Where did you hear this? (2) Why isn't there a
knowledge base article? (3) When the *!@! are they going to post a
patch? I mean, they actually skipped their monthly patch cycle for
December. I'm tempted to use the M word, because that's the only kind
of company that can screw up this way.
