Script errors in IE6

I am using a computer with XP SP2 and IE6 and have started having a lot of
problems with script errors. Some of the errors seem to be keeping me from
accessing certain links that when clicked show a "javascript: " type
message in the IE status bar and then I see an Error on page message. I can
click on the symbol in the status bar (yellow triangle with exclamation
mark) and see the script error information. Some of these links that I
can't access on my computer can be accessed on another computer, so I am
trying to figure out if something is missing or corrupted on my machine.

I have looked at the Microsoft page on How to Troubleshoot Script Errors:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308260
and have tried the suggestions up to repairing the script engine, but since
I am already running Windows XP, it looks like I would have to try and
repair XP. I was hoping I would be able to do something that wouldn't
involve me having to reinstall SP2 on a dial-up modem (hours and hours and
hours to download all of the updates, etc.).

I have checked firewalls, antivirus, etc.

Any suggestions?
DSS

I do not have Yahoo Companion or Google Toolbar installed. I had disabled
everything that might stop pop-ups and that wasn't working. The link you
gave me for Windows Script 5.6 is for Windows 98 and I am running Windows
XP. Should I instead download from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

I had considered trying that earlier after searching Microsoft, but wanted
to check. Let me which one to download since I am running Windows XP SP2.

Thanks for your help. I won't be able to try your suggestion for several
hours though, but will let you know what happens after you let me know for
sure which link I should use.

Hi,
Go ahead and download Windows Script 5.6 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...f6-249c-4a72-bfcf-fc6af26dc390&displaylang=en
It may replace missing or damaged files.

[Longshot] Try uninstalling Yahoo Companion and/or Google toolbar. Disable
(as a test) any other programs that are capable of blocking pop-ups.

Hope this helps,

Well, I downloaded Script Engine 5.6 for Windows XP and that didn't make any
difference with the script errors that I am receiving. I was hoping that
would solve the problem. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the
solution. Any other ideas?

I followed steps 1a, 1b, and 2a and nothing improved. When I read the
information from:

Error Message When You Browse the Web: An Error Has Occurred in the Script
on This Page
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306831

It said to open the Java Virtual Machine by going to

but I am not sure what they mean by "open". When going to that page I am
told that I have the latest and I see the showcase animate like they said I
should (although it took quite a while). I am still having problems with
script errors. I am beginning to think that I should just take my computer
back to factory issued condition and start over. Unfortunately I have a
dial-up modem and would need to update to SP2 and all of the other updates
and that could take days and days.

Should I just consider reformatting/recovering my system?

I have run updated versions of Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy,
CWShredder, Norton Antivirus 2005 (it tells me that it finds Adware.Gator as
C:\\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\HDPlugin1019.dll is a Adware threat -
but when I try to use the removal tool that Norton linked me to, the tool
says it does not find Adware.Gator - and I also checked for Gain Publishing
in my Add/Remove programs as Norton suggested), Trend HouseCall, and
Pandasoftware (which might have found the Adware.Gator, but I can't see the
button to access the report, plus I would have to buy software to remove the
spyware), and I posted a HijackThis Log on another forum and they helped me
clean up a few things but considered my machine clean. Spybot S&D finds
several BackWeb Light entries, but I believe this is installed on my HP
computer to keep me updated with my HP software. I have not been able to
find much help in trying to remove the Adware.Gator. I have searched the
web and I found some other references to people having the same problem, but
the solutions they supposedly found were not clear enough for me to try. I
don't know if Adware.Gator might cause this type of problem.

I also tried disabling all of my IE add-ons and when I opened my home page
http://hp.netscape.com/hp.adp it said that I would need to enable on of the
add-ons, but even before I enabled it I had the script error symbol in my IE
status bar. And these errors also happen in FireFox.

Thank you very much for the reply and suggestions.

Hi Dss :-)

I recenty had a poster here with a problem with removing Gator/Gain. It is
very difficult to remove and the removal tools could not remove it, nor
could he remove it manually. It was found to be due to ownership and
permission problems. See this post in the HJT forum at AumHa and see if it
might help. (I am Tink/Jan)

How to Troubleshoot Script Errors in Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308260

Hi,
I, personally, would trust Ad-aware and Spybot with regard to Gator, rather
than NAV2005.

The fact that Firefox also shows script errors suggests to me that another
program may be causing this.

I would disable, from within the program or from Start> Run> msconfig>
Startup any program that might be interfering with IE. Try starting up with
NAV2005 disabled (briefly) to see if NAV is involved.

Don
[MS MVP- IE/OE]

Thanks for the suggestions, but I have already tried disabling NAV's script
blocking and that made no difference. I also have tried the Adware.Gator
removal tool and information given at the link you gave me. That is the
information Norton gave me and the tool did not detect Gator and the other
information on removal didn't work either (I found no Gain Publishing
software).

I appreciate your help.

Jan,

Thanks for the information. I cannot see the Adware.Gator as Norton
specifies it. Norton says it is at
C:\ WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\HDPlugin1019.dll and even when fixing
my folder options to see hidden files and system files I cannot see or find
it in this location. Some other posts that I had found concerning this had
Adware.Gator listed as HDPlugin1019.dll in a subfolder of Downloaded Program
Files and I could not find those listed either. Norton keeps finding it and
giving me the same message and when I ran a scan at Pandasoftware it found
something in that folder, but I was not able to see a report because I never
had an option to click on any type of report button that it said would be
available (maybe back to my script errors I am receiving).

I have tried briefly disabling all options in NAV and still received the

This is the same information that shows in the status bar when I click on

By the way, you offered some suggestions a week or so ago when I was having
problems viewing pages at Amazon - they would just appear blank. You had
given me several links with suggestions, but then the pages were appearing

noticing the script errors right after.

Jan,

Thanks for the information. I cannot see the Adware.Gator as Norton
specifies it. Norton says it is at
C:\ WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\HDPlugin1019.dll and even when fixing
my folder options to see hidden files and system files I cannot see or
find
it in this location. Some other posts that I had found concerning this
had
Adware.Gator listed as HDPlugin1019.dll in a subfolder of Downloaded
Program
Files and I could not find those listed either. Norton keeps finding it
and
giving me the same message and when I ran a scan at Pandasoftware it found
something in that folder, but I was not able to see a report because I
never
had an option to click on any type of report button that it said would be
available (maybe back to my script errors I am receiving).

Do you have Windows Explorer set to show hidden files and folders?

I am having a similar problem. many links on such pages as www.msnbc.com
(my home page) return only a "click" sound when I click on them. Opening
Vis a right mouse click) in a new window results in a blank page and "done"
as status on the bottom of the page. Video files also do this. Firefox
however DOES open the links and even opens the video files (of coure to no
use as the message (page) I get tells me to download IE 6.0, Media Player...
etc)

That fiefox opens all the links IE fails on suggests that something is
bothering IE. I and using the beta of MS's Antispyeare and Ad_aware. Both
show the system is 'clean'. System is MediaCenter 2004.

Any help would be greatly appriciatied.

if it helps this is the URL pointed to when opening a video file in a new
window...

I have Windows Explorer set to show hidden files and folders and I unchecked
Hide protected operating system files. I have tried different settings in
my view settings for folders in Windows Explorer and do not see
HDPlugin1019.dll anywhere. I even did a search of my hard drives making
sure I checked system files, hidden files, and subfolders and the search
came up empty.
