Screensaver slow

Hi,

I have read many of the Screensaver problems that people are speaking about,
but my problem doesn't quite fit the issues discussed so far. The
screensaver works fine with the random photo theme on Windows Vista Home
Premium. It won't go to sleep, but that is because I have a UD Agent Cancer
Research programme running all the time in the background.

However, getting out of the screensaver is painfully slow. Moving the
mouse, pressing the power button work OK, but I have to wait well over a
minute, probably two minutes, before I get to the long-on screen.
Everything else works fine and I have no speed issues. This is on a Dell
4600 Pentium 4 with 1Gb RAM, loads of disc space and an NVIDIA Graphics 7300S
video adapter working an HP w19ev display (Overall Vista score 3.6+). All
drivers up to date.

Grateful for any help with this.

By chance on the Photos Screen Saver Settings did you choose the option to
"Use pictures and videos from:" so that you could point it at a certain
directory?

I've noticed the same symptoms you describe when I use this option.

When I choose the "Use all pictures and videos from the Photo Gallery"
option the screen saver stops and gets me to my desktop (I don't have it set
to ask for logon when resuming from screen saver) in about 10 seconds, but
using the other option takes as long as 3 minutes to get me to my desktop.

I'm thinking a bug in the screen saver.

Michael,

Yes, that is exactly it. I will try it with the gallery and see what
happens, but I was trying to avoid using up disc space by having photos all
over the place.

Further analysis confirms that unless you have the screensaver pointing to
the pictures in Windows PhotoGallery you will get a very slow response from
the screensaver.

Thank you Michael.

Not a problem, hopefully it will be fixed soon . . .

Using this option won't increase disk space usage, it will simply use ALL
photos that the Windows Photo Gallery has indexed, as opposed to using only
files in one directory . . . I'd suggest hiding anything you don't want to
show up in the screen saver when using the photo gallery option. <wink>
