Screen Saver Not Working

My screen saver is not working. This started right after I bought my
Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000. My SS worked fine before
this. I plugged it in, and the mouse worked fine. But the SS stopped
working. I would unplug the receiver from the USB plug, and the SS would
work. So, I then installed the software that came with the mouse, and SS
still didn't work. So, I uninstalled software, no better. Now, SS doesn't
even work when I unplug the USB receiver plug!

Yes, I have verified the settings for the SS in the Display settings, it is
set on 1 minute, with no password. SS works when I ask for a preview from
that tab.

Disabling PowerDVD from loading at startup did not help.

RegEdit Settings appear to be okay.

Yes, I have tried calling Microsoft, and the guy made me do a whole bunch of
things, but no help there. He had me disable just about everything in the
startup (msconfig), with no result. He had me install an updated version of
the software, with no help.

My mouse did not come with a PS2 plug, so I can't try that, but I doubt it
would help, as my SS doesn't even work when I unplug receiver any more.

I am using WinXP Home with SP2 all up to date. No viruses or spyware
present. I do not have Media Center. I have not installed or connected
anything else new since I got the new mouse.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I just had this happen to me when I installed a Microsoft wireless 6000
laser mouse. I was helped on this news server so I will tell you what I
found out.

There is a conflict between ther wireless mouse and a DVD program in
startup. Click Start, Run and type in "msconfig" without the quotes. Click
OK. Click on the Startup tab. Look for a program that has to do with a DVD
player or launcher. Uncheck it and click Apply. You will have to restart the
computer. After restart, set you screensaver for 1 minute and sit back and
see if it comes on. If it doesn't, go back into msconfig and make sure you
didn't miss something to do with DVD.

Let me know how you make out...

As I had mentioned in my message, I tried that and it didn't work. After
your message, I tried it again, just for the heck of it, and it didn't work.
At this point, I somehow no longer think it has to do with the mouse. The
problem started with the new wireless mouse, but now it doesn't stop when I
disconnect the wireless mouse. Thanks for trying though...any other ideas?
