Screen Resolution Oddity, and Programs Running at Start Up.

I should know how to fix these problems, I certainly used to.

I recently added wireless cable to my laptop, and previous to that had been
installing quite a few programs onto it as well. I reset my computer after
installing a webcam, and the computer wouldn't start back up. When I re-set
it again, the resolution was small, like it would be for safe mode. I didn't
pick that option, so I didn't understand why it shrunk. I went to properties,
and changed the screen size back to normal, but all the icons, and text, and
everything else stayed tiny. How do I change it back, and prevent it from
reverting to this idiotic setting again?

Also, I think part of the problem is all of the programs that start
automatically when I turn my computer on. Web services, instant messaging
devices, and many other programs. I know some appear in the startup folder,
but most of that's causing my problems are not found in that folder. Where is
the box that has all the stuff that runs at start up? I think that's been
causing alot of my slowdown.

While I'm at it, I've noticed since I installed the cable modem, windows,
like for example buddy lists, will just randomly pop to the front of the
screen. What's causing this, and how can I stop it?

1.(maybe) right click on desktop, choose PROPERTIES, choose
APPEARANCE...additional settings can be accessed through the EFFECTS and
ADVANCED buttons

2.Most programs start from the registry, but you can access that portion by
typing msconfig in the Start > Run box

3.It's running from start up
