I have the same issue...when I open media center I get all the sounds of it
opening but the screen remains blank...also when trying to play NPR when I do
get in, I am getting an audio file error message.....MSFT support staff has
been no help at all, directing me back to Dell, the OEM....this is BS because
the audio file error occurred AFTER MSFT staff had me change settings to
reolve a remote recorder issue....

I have a Gateway 610 Media Center and also have the same issue! I ran a
virus scan, a spyware scan and reinstalled the screen drivers, to no avail.
And now the screen is going blank even when Media Center isn't playing!?
It is obvious it is NOT an OEM problem since it seems to be happening on more
than one manufacturers system, but rather a software issue. Hey MSFT Techs -
are you paying attention!? If this keeps up, I'm going back to the Mac!

Enter into the Safe Mode.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

On the BOOT.INI tab under Boot Options check "/BASEVIDEO." Now restart
in Regular Mode.Open Display Properties and set the refresh rate,
resolution etc. which will support the video card and monitor. Then
reverse the changes to BOOT.INI and reboot.

If that doesn't work, then either the monitor or the video card is faulty.

I do appreciate the help. At the same time, I have to admit, I'm not the
most technical guy. So, I have some questions:

1) How do I "Enter into the Safe Mode."
Start>Run>msconfig [enter] (This step, I understand)
On the BOOT.INI tab under Boot Options check "/BASEVIDEO."
(This step, I understand)>

2) How do I "restart in Regular Mode."

3) Where can I find the refresh rate, resolution, etc for the display on a
Gateway 610 Media Center PC?

4) What does "reverse the changes to BOOT.INI and reboot." mean? How do I
do that?

Hi Lance,
Your query:-How do I "restart in Regular Mode."

When your job is finished in Safe Mode then uncheck /SAFEBOOT option
which you checked before.

If you still have problem you may go through the following:-
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

Your query:"Where can I find the refresh rate, resolution, etc"

you may right click on desktop, select properties, click settings there
you will find screen resolution option. If you click Advanced tab,and
click Monitor-there you can change the refresh rate of your monitor.

Your query:'What does "reverse the changes to BOOT.INI and reboot."

I have already explained at the beginning of this post, just uncheck
/SAFEBOOT option which you checked before and simply restart the system.
