Screen Goes Black

My computer works great until it has run for a few hours in a row. Then,
without any notice, the screen goes black and I cannot get it back. The
Control + Alt + Delete command has NO effect. I have to shut down the
computer by pressing the power button on the PC for several seconds. When I
restart the computer, it starts back up as if nothing happened. This is
happening on a frequent basis now and is an inconvenience - especially if I
am working on a big project. The computer usually recovers some of what I
did, but not all. A computer tech said my problem was dust blocking the air
vents and he cleaned the computer fan and other parts on the inside. This did
NOT solve the problem. I have XP Professional, an ASUS motherboard PAP800-VM,
and a Gateway FPD 1730 monitor.

I have been told that the problem is either the power supply, motherboard,
or graphics card acting up or even failing. Any ideas?

The same thing is happening to my pc, I think maybe it is the power
supply, because I just changed the MB, cpu and monitor I'm now running a
intel 2.93 w/ onboard video and dust had nothing to do w/ it. the only
thing that's still on is the power supply. I RDP into my pc and when I
keep it on all of a sudden it does go black also, I have to shut it
down, I don't get any power in my keyboard but my mouse can still be
seen and moved around. I thought it was my old asus mb but I guess now
that wasn't the problem

Yes those are all possibilities, along with the monitor. Try a different
one to start with, then swap out the video card. If it's still a problem
swap out the power supply.

Perhaps your monitor has its own "sleep" or power-save mode that is set to
'sleep' after a few hours. Is the system on and being used for all this
time or just sitting idle for most of the time?

Try reading the manual for the monitor and adjusting the controls on the
monitor itself.

Restarting the machine with the power button (and not properly shutting
down) can do more harm than good, so it is best to get to the bottom of the
problem....

It could well be an overheating problem, or any of the things mentioned
below.

Check that your video card is seated in the slot firmly and correctly, and
that the monitor cable is connected to the port firmly.

I suppose a firm check would be to connect the monitor to a different
computer, and see if the same behaviour occurs.

I logged into this site yesterday for help. The same happened to me. This
is what I did today. I went to control panel's power options and everythingg
seems to be ok. There is adjust power management settings somewhere else.
Mine is on the taskbar icon(Dell QuickSet). I went in it and saw created a
new power scheme and saved.

Get an antivirus free scan and remove from the web or decrease the monitor
brightness to save power. If you have a laptop with batteries set the
brightness to the same # when running with the electrical plug. Not the
maximum.
