Screen fonts changed weight!

Greetings. I expect this is the wrong group but it's the best my little
brain can come up with.

Yesterday, I installed a couple of programmes. Then (or around-about then)
the screen fonts changed. Not by much - the change is less to do with the
font face and more to do with the font weight; mostly the font seems to have
become 'lighter' (for example the captions to the short-cut icons on my desk
top are a little 'thinner' and as a result now have a more exaggerated black
drop shadow).

Maybe it's most obvious when viewing text in the Explorer web browser.

Even as I type this post the font is a little different.

If you hadn't spent the previous year looking at the 'old' fonts you
probably wouldn't notice that anything has changed.

Weird, isn't it. Any thoughts welcomed.

Regards.

Rightclick open area center of screen and click Properties.
Click the Appearance tab and then the Effects button.
See if they are set for Fade Effect and Standard.
See if all blocks are checked except Use Large Icons. Click OK.

Check the font smoothing settings. Go to Control Panel / Display /
Appearance / Effects and play with the font smoothing settings.

Fixed!

As suggested by both Byte and Zilbandi, navigated to Effects and discovered
that the method of smoothing font edges had been changed from 'Standard' to
'Clear type' ("No, I didn't touch it officer"). I changed it back and bingo!

Thanks to both and all.
