help!

my pc's been going completely screwy... all of a sudden, when it boots up -
on the Windows XP logo, there's distorted bits all over the screen. when it
finally gets to desktop, it looks ok but then the monitor keeps just
flicking on and off until it eventually gives up the ghost altogether and I
have to reboot the PC to get the screen working again... however, it's NOT
a physical fault with the monitor (or monitor cable) as i replaced thrm with
another one yet, exactly the same thing happened!?

It's actually behaving at the moment but it's bound to start going wrong
again. has anyone else ever had a problem like this?

cheers

Yes and it was a physical fault with the display card.

Since I posted my original message, my PC got even worse and just kept
intermittently locking up for no apparent reason whatsoever. Safe Mode
worked fine. I've gone into Control Panel > System > Device Manager and
disabled my Nvidia card and the PC seems to be a lot more stable now. Oddly
enough though, when the PC boots up, the Windows XP logo screen has
distorted characters all over it. Anyone got any idea what that would be
happening?

Cheers

Already given you the most likely explanation.

Have you tried going into cmos/bios and check the graphic win size option?
It might help to ensure it is set to the same size as your video ram.
Another option might be to ensure that there are no nv* startups in your
msconfig (run > msconfig > startups > disable any nv* ) The other option
might be to remove your video card and plug your monitor into the regular
port.
