School Library Wants Barcode Solution

What's your experience with cheap solutions? ...scanner, printer, code,
font?

A small school with no money needs a barcode solution. I've found it easy
to use Code39 since there isn't any encoding required. But we want to
implement ISBN and that requires encoding. Is there any free code available
for encoding and decoding ISBN barcodes? What about free fonts for that?

Also, I wonder how cheap to go with a scanner and label printer. I fear
that doing them such a favor as finding too cheap of stuff would turn out to
be no favor. What do you use?

Greetings,

WASP nest barcode scanners are a great value & support ISBN. I've used the
CCD handheld versions w/ great results. More info at: www.waspbarcode.com

re: Printing ISBN (bookland) barcodes: http://www.tux.org/~milgram/bookland/
may be of help. A google search of "ISBN bookland" may also turn up
additional information helpful in locating a low (free) cost solution.

Dear wds
Barcodes:

I created an application for my small school library which used a Code39
barcode, a Dymo label printer, and a "wedge" type barcode scanner which
shares the keyboard port of the circulation desk computer. It worked fine
for my school. If you want to see the implementation, you can download my
application (which is free) - see my sig..

I do have *one* caution, however! I used the Dymo label printer for barcodes
and spine labels for the books. They fade quickly if they are exposed to
sunlight - i.e in less than a year or two. Perhaps UV protective tape would
help - I haven't had the chance to try that. The barcode labels in my
library were inside the front cover and weren't exposed to sunlight, and
have worked just fine.

ISBN:

I'm curious - how are you going to use ISBN in your application? Is it going
to be your primary key? What will you do to manage multiple copies of the
same book? Or with books that don't have an ISBN? Or non-book materials? I'd
be interested in discussing this!
