I bought a Microsoft step by step book to learn about XML files I opened the custom schema data file from the book in Word 2003 but see no text, only element boxes. Does this sound right? I was expecting to see "code."

Hi =?Utf-8?B?TGluZGEgSA==?=,
I bought a Microsoft step by step book to learn about XML files I opened the custom
schema data file from the book in Word 2003 but see no text, only element boxes. Does this
sound right? I was expecting to see "code."What's the name of the book?

If you opened a XML file as "XML" then yes, you'd see just the tags. Probably in
pinkish-colored boxes?

If you want to see the XML code, you have to view the document as plain text. Either in
Notepad, or activate "Confirm conversions on open" in Tools/Options/General, then choose
"Plain text" when Word prompts you for the file format.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?TGluZGEgSA==?=,
It has one sample schema, but I need other samples to learn this feature. I don't know
where to get .xsd files or how to write them. Can you provide suggestions?Well, my first thought is that, to learn the XML stuff, perhaps a different book would be
better suited? I just worked my way through "Office 2003 XML for Power Users" from Apress,
and found it did a pretty good job. (You'll find two reviews on the word.mvps.org site.)

"I am also having problems validating a schema. I opened a .xms file in Notepad and
changed the element names. After
saving it, I must have changed something I shouldn't have. Two of the element names in the
original schema still appear in
the XML Structure Task Pane even though they aren't in the schema."

If you want to open the schema in Notepad again, copy the text, and paste it into a reply
I'd be happy to take a look and see if I can see anything :-)

BTW, there's a office.xml newsgroup. You might find more people there who can help you :-)
