I have three Windows 2000 domain controllers. Not one of them shows who is the SCHEMA MASTER. All of the four FSMO roles could be shown by these DCs. How do I configure any of them to become a SCHEMA MASTER? Thanks for your help.

How to Determine the Schema FSMO Holder in a Forest
1.. Click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK.
2.. On the Console menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in, click Add, double-click
Active Directory Schema, click Close, and then click OK.
3.. Right-click Active Directory Schema in the top left pane, and then
click Operations Masters to view the server holding the schema master role.
NOTE: For the Active Directory Schema snap-in to be available, you may have
to register the Schmmgmt.dll file. To do this, click Start, click Run, type
regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll in the Open box, and then click OK. A message is
displayed that states the registration was successful.

This kb has instructions for transferring the Schema Master role.

Your instructions are based on the assumption that there is SCHEMA MASTER, in the domain. My problem here is that All of the three Windows 2000 domain controllers, only show "ERROR" in the text area where the name of the server should appear. Above it there's a line "The server is currently offline." All of my DCs are online. The button "CHANGE" is always grayed. So, schema master is missing in any of the three DCs. How will I configure one?

FSMO roles can also be forcibly seized with ntdsutil. This might be what you
need to do.

Jess,

Just to throw in one more ring to this conversation, if you install the
Support Tools ( located on both the WIN2000 Server CD and on the WIN2000
Service Pack CD in the Support | Tools folder ) you can use several of the
included tools to determine which DC holds which of the FIVE fsmo roles.
For example, you can use netdom query fsmo and you could use replmon....

However, it seems like Simon might be on the right track. The link that
Laura gave you is also pretty good.

HTH,

Cary
