My friend forgot about Disk Clean and so didn't run it for a while. When his
system slowed down I reminded him of disk Clean. He ran it and it took 39
minutes.

If this is taking forever maybe your disk is busy. When you are
running disk cleanup is anything else running? You might want to run a
chkdsk or even a chkdsk /f to check your disk's indexes for damage or
bad sectors. Also, run defrag to see if you have a cluttered disk.
