How can I schedule Outlook 2003 to check for incoming email every hour
without having the application opened and running in the background?

You can't. Like most software, Outlook must be running in order to function.

I suppose I should have my question clearer. What I want to be able to do is
to have Outlook 2003 scheduled to open every hour to check for incoming email
and after 5 minutes for the application to close.

No. You cannot configure a program to launch automatically (Outlook or any
other program for that matter).
To do automatic polling, Outlook must be running.

Russ, a user can set up a Windows Scheduled Task, this would open it at a
preset time and if Outlook is set to check E-mail on opening then it WOULD
poll the server.

Thanks In Advance

No they can't. Not once an hour. And not advised, either. How does on assure
that Outlook then closes cleanly? Sounds like a setup for data or profile
corruption.
