SCANNER PROBLEM

C

Cheryl UK

When I start/restart my computer with my scanner switched
on the computer will not start but freezes halfway through
start up. I then have to turn the scanner off and restart.

Also, when I am scanning a document it freezes my
computer or else it will not allow me to reduce the
scanning screen and work on another word document etc.
whilst it is scanning.

Does anyone have any suggestions please.

Thank you.

It would appear that you may have a "bad" install of the scanner or your
PC doesen't have the memory to do "two" things at once or both. Did this
PC come with Windows 2000 on it? What amount of memory and processor?
Scanner model?

Bob. Thanks for replying. I have tried installing the
scanner several times. It doesn't do everything I had
hoped. The computer has a c-drive, which I use for
programmes only of 19.00GB of which I have only used 3.35
so far and a D-drive, which has 18.6 GB of which I have
only used 3.31. Therefore, I would imagine that I have
enough memory to do two things at once. It is a AMD Duron
computer with a virtual memory of 392,688 KB RAM. The
Scanner is an Epson 1640 SU and my printer is an Epson
Stylus Photo 890. Does this information help you work out
what my problem could be? I hope so because it is driving
me nuts and holding me up with my work. My computer came
with Windows 2000 Professional on it. However, I do not
use any network. It is stand alone. I probably didn't
need Windows 2000 - Windows 98 would probably have done
the job! At the time Windows 2000 was newish and
therefore I expected it to be better than 98 which was
fairly unstable at times. What do you think? Sorry for
long note. Got carried away. Look forward to hearing
from you. Cheryl.

From the this information it would appear that the USB ports are where
the problem lies. Since it is an AMD processor you may also have a VIA
chipset which require "4- in 1" to make things work properly. Since you
also say that Win2000 was new when you bought this several BIOS updates
for the motherboard have probably been released to fix issues like
this(USB sub-system not working right). You may want to consider getting
a technician to go over your PC and load the latest BIOS, and
motherboard drivers as well as update Windows 2000 to a more current
service pack to fix other operating issues as well. The actual CPU and
memory seem to be capable enough, it just sounds like things need to be
updated.
