Scanner no longer working or recognised

Windows XP has suddenly stopped recognising my scanner (HP ScanJet 4100C) as
a valid device. Under device manager it is listed as "unknown device."
When I try to import from TWAIN via an application (ex. Photoshop) I get the
message "Could not open the TWAIN source. Make sure there is a valid source
for your scanner in the TWAIN directory found in the Windows directory."

The scanner is securely connected to both the PC and the electricity.

The scanner does not do anything when I press the button on the front,
although the first problem time it did start Photoshop but never actually
got to scanning anything. Now, no response at all.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Reinstall the scanner drivers and software. Treat the installation as if
you were just doing it for the first time.

I never got to install the scanner software to begin with. When I put the
disc in, it says the software is not compatible with my operating system
(it's a scanner I had previously used with an older machine that had Win98.)
However that turned out not to matter as XP took care of scanner operation.
So there's nothing to reinstall on that end.

As for the driver, I redownloaded it from HP and when I tried to install it
again I got a "fatal error."

From the looks of it is appears my scanner is dead, as does not react at all
when I press the scan buttons. But if that were the case, the PC would not
even recognise that it was connected...right?

I have got exactly the same problem: my scanner always functione
reasonably, but stopped abruptly while processing a scan job i
Photoshop just yesterday. After that the only thing I got out of it wa
"unknown device". Installing the update from the HP site (sj653mu.exe
did not have the slightest effect due to a "fatal error". Since then
have tried almost anything, but I still haven't got a clue to what i
wrong...
