ScanMaker 4 exposure controls?

Is it possible to change the exposure on the SM4 to match the tone
range of a standard?

I'm trying to make a B&W profile to match the scanner to a Stouffer
reflective stepscale, but I can't get the scanner to change exposure to
set the brightness of the paper white point.

I'm using VueScan 8.2.18 and WinXP. VueScan has a slider for brightness
under the color tab, but it doesn't change the white level in small
amounts and when I rescan with the brightness reset to a lower level it
seems to revert to giving a 100% value to the lightest step sometimes.
I've tried working in grayscale and RGB with outputs to match, 8 and 16
bit and any other controls that might help, but can't refine the output
to give me paper white of 0.05 density, L* = 95.6. I can get either 99
or 92 when viewed in Photoshop 6, but nothing in between.

I updated VueScan to 8.3, but I still don't see any way to adjust the
exposure to control B&W tone levels on the ScanMaker4 that really
allows me to set white, mid and black tones to match a scanned
reference scale. I did go back to ScanWizard and found that *it* allows
setting up a curve that does exactly what I want to do, so the scanner
can do it, but ScanWiz doesn't have all the features that I use in VS.

Am I missing something in VS that will allow approximate B&W
"profiling" without making a real ($$$) profile?
