I try to run scandisk through both the Run menu and through the Tool part of
the Properties (C Drive). I can only run chkdsk, not the whole chkdsk C:/f
(where it fixes the errors). After rebooting to do the chkdsk, the message
says "A checkdisk has been scheduled. The checkdisk has been cancelled.
Windows has finished checking the disk." The message shows right away, the
checking of the disk has not been done yet. When doing the chkdsk (the first
3 steps of the process), there are errors found that need to be fixed. I
can't complete the task of fixing them. Does anyone know how to fix this? I
run on Windows XP, my computer is only 6 months old.

Hi mate have had the same problem in the past, have you tried a system
restore back to before you first had the problem? If not try a system restore
try defrag and see if that works.
You said that your pc was only 6 months old did you get a set of diagnostic
disks with it you get them with most PC from the likes of Dell IBM etc try
using them to check for physical disk errors.
If the Drive is SATA make sure up to date drivers have been installed, if
you have changed them roll the driver back and try again.
Sometimes windows cant do a full scan if the disk is being used you can try
to lock the drive from a command prompt by lock c: and trying scandisk from
dos
Lastly you could try a 3rd party disk tool like disk keeper you should be
able to get it on a free trial.

I would rather not do the system restore as I just got done with a month of
my computers freezing up and found it was probably a SpySweeper program
problem. They just did another update of their program, also Windows had 12
updates yesterday, so I don't know which one fixed it but it is now fixed. I
see that to run the chkdsk C:/f (or /r) you have to have NTFS, how do I
figure out what my computer is running, and if it is different than NTFS can
I convert it easily? If I use the disk keeper will it fix the problem so I
can run it through chkdsk again?

You can check your fat table by right clicking My computer choosing manage.
In the right hand pane click disk management(local). You should see your
current drives as Disk 0 and upwards. It will say on the lable either fat 32
NTFS etc.
If it is anything other than NTFS right click the drive choose convert and
select NTFS. Ensure it is on convert and click OK. It should only take a few
moments and you wont loose anything.
Once it is converted try CHKDSK again i must admit iam not sure that CHKDSK
needs to use NTFS as it is an old program from the horrid days of DOS.
With regards to disk keeper it has done the job in the past. It is more
efficent that scandisk and generally once uninstalled the windows scandisk
should work.
One more thing to try, stop as many programs running from task manager as
possible. Do it one at a time and try scandisk again.
