Scandisk running after crash corrupting files

I have backups of the vital stuff, and have fire-walls, AV
software and used a RAID to safeguard against physical
failure, but hadn't counted on the operating system itself
destroying ~50GB of data.

Is there anything that can be done to recover or fix this
problem? Or does anyone even know the route cause?! Or any
way to stop it from happening again

To blame this on the OS is not very helpful, and more than a bit vague. And
I would think that you would recover from this by restoring the data,
although 50GB will take a while. I'm also puzzled by the reference to
scandisk in your subject, since Windows 2000 does not use scandisk. Can you
clarify what happened?
