Scandisk error message

Keith

I have a Dell Computer and am encountering problems with
Scandisk. I start Scandisk and I receive an error message
stated that scandisk has restarted 10 times because
windows or another program has been writing to this drive
(drive C). Quitting some programs may enable scandisk to
finish sooner. Do you want to continue receiving this
warning? How is this problem resolved?

You can boot the recovery console and run
chkdsk /r
from the command line
(/r implies /f)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

I realized that the windows version I am running is Windows
ME-millenium and not 2000. I have a operating system
reinstallation guide CD, drivers and utilites CD and
Applications backup CD for Windows Mllenium. My system came
from Dell with the Windows software already installed. I
do not believe that I have a separate CD for the initial
installtion software. Is there another way to access the
recovery consule? Which CD should I use? I am not
experienced with this type of problem. Please let me know.

I am also having a similar problem with the disk
fragmentation system tool. The fragmentation starts and
then gets to 4% and then starts over. I do not get any
error messages.

AFAIK WinME has no recovery console. Best to post in a win 9x group.
Probably boot a startup disk to a command prompt and run it.

I'm not an expert, but when my Scandisk or Defrag does
that, I Ctrl+Alt+Del and end all of the "invisible" tasks
that are going on. This always works for me....
