SBS was Removed

I knew SBS had to be the Authentication server and had to
be installed first. I built "Server" on SBS and then
decided not to use SBS. This company also owns full
version 2000Server. I think I built the SQL2000 server
then joined the Domain that was on the SBS server.

I rebuilt the SBS server with Standard server, using the
same names, but I never rebuilt the SQL2000 server. I
think some of the user information in the SIDS is okay,
but I think this goofup ruined some of the registry
entries for networking and active directory, along with
some of the SIDs at lower system levels inside active
directory.

I lost the reverse lookup in the DNS service. I placed it
back. And I added the SQL service to active directory, it
was not... For about 5.5 hours I have been up fine.

I still am thinking of rebuilding the SQL server and
joining it "virgin" sort of speak to the Authenticaion
server, the one that used to be the SBS server. Now it's
a standard version of 2000 server and domain controller.

I would like to avoid a rebuild, but I will do whatever is
best. Again, thanks for your time and help...

Hi Bill,

Oh boy, you really messed up. SBS needs to be the king in the forrest and it
has Exchange, ISA and SQL with it.
You can only start from scratch.
Have a look at www.smallbizserver.net and the
microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000 newsgroup.
You can't repair this installation.

I know. I got rid of SBS. I am not using exchange, ISA
or SQL on that server. I have a seperate server for the
SQL. And it seems to be okay now, after you reminded me
to point both DNS to the server. It was dynamic and
pointing to the isp.

What I don't understand is what was actually happening
when the SQL started sending packs like a firehose... I
have been up solid for 7.5 hours.

I learn by messing up... Thanks for the help. I'm on the
edge of knowing what I need to know.

Hi Bill,

It's a shame you got rid of SBS as you've already payed for the whole thing.

Have you patched the server for the SQL-slammer and other worms?
