Saving workspace

A version of this question was asked in 2004 (search on 'save workspace') but
maybe we could revisit it.

In Excel one can 'Save Workspace' and it makes a file with a pointer to each
of the currently-open files, so that later one can open Elephants.xlw to open
all of them together. I wish I had the same in Word. I'm using WD2002, Has it
been addressed in WD2003?

There is nothing like this built into either version. There are several ways
to do it yourself:

1. Use the Work menu: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/WorkMenu.htm

2. Make a batch file on your desktop, containing a series of commands to
open the files.

3. Write macros to store and retrieve the list of files. The list can be
kept in a document variable in Normal.dot, or in a key that you create in
the registry.

4. Get an add-in that offers the feature, probably by supplying macros of
the sort described in #3. One such add-in, which includes workspaces among
dozens of other features, is WordToys
(http://www.officeboosters.com/wtmain.htm).

Thanks for this rapid response. Every time I get to feeling I'm good at Word
(and the other apps) because I train hundreds of people in it as well as use
it myself, someone comes along to show me something useful I've never heard
of! The Work Menu seems best for what I want - I will study it.

I still think the Workspace idea like in Excel would be a useful bell or
whistle for MS to add to WD in MSO12 though ...

Thank you again
