saving word files with mapped drives

I access a vpn, when offline the drives are still mapped. When i click on
save as in word, there is an extremely long delay. If I unmap the drives,
its fine. Im using XP pro and office 2k3. Is there any fix for this other
than making myself logon/logoff scripts that unmap and remap my drives every
time.

Hi Derek,

If Word is 'told' the drives are supposed to be available
it basically waits for a spell, then times out and moves on,
especially if your templates are on one of the mapped drives
and or your printer selected under File=>Print is accessed
via the network.

There is not anything on my mapped drives other than word documents. I know
there was a hotfix for this problem in windows 2000, but im running xp pro.
Such as article 321126.
