Tools=>Options=>Save
[x] Make local copy of files stored on removable or network drives
If I select the above option in word and then open a word document that is
located on a 2003 server and then try to save it, Word tries to rename the
file rather than overwrite it.
I cannot recreate this fault on a Novell server.
Any ideas please?

The way Word works is to create a copy of the document you open as a temporary file. When you save a document it deletes the
original and renames your updated temporary file to the original file name.

If it runs into a permissions issue or can't navigate back to the network path (can happen with very long paths or odd characters in
the name, or saving a network path mapped to be a root (single letter plus backslash) disk drive).
