saving user profiles

I'm new to XP. On the third reinstall in two weeks and learning along the way! Question on user profiles:
When a profile is stored (I use first, middle, last name) can that profile (specifically mine) be stored (I backup on DAT tape) and
be restored to a reinstall and have it work?

The hope is to restore personal desktop and certain user specific system settings (performance, variables etc) and also certain
program registry entries.

Is it possible to restore 'Vic' from another install and have it work?
