saving photos as jpg vs bmp

Somehow xp has decided that photos from the internet should be saved as bitmap (bmp) files, whatever their properties are on the net it also doesnt want to use the file name that the photo started with. How do I change it so that they download as whatever type file and file name they started as? I prefer JPG. But others are ok. Please help. Windows help didn't help

It's time to perform some Spring Cleaning:

Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE , and hit enter.
This will start your disk cleanup utility. Make sure to cleanup
your Temporary Internet Files.
