saving excel to network drive only creates temp files

excel 97 is not saving to network drive correctly. Temp
files are being generated. Latest SR1 SR2 have been
installed. Still problems saving to network drive.

There was an old issue with Novell networks, (Check their site). The temp
files are caused as Excel goes through a save routine where a copy with a
random name is created as the saved file and the original is deleted before
finally the temp file is renamed. Something is interrupting this process.
Check also and virus scanning software. (Temporarily disable)
