Saves file as a temp file

Every time I open an Excel worksheet and amend it in some
way on saving a message appears and saves my file as a
temp file. I accept by pressing OK. Then I try to save
again and it appears with the file location window. The
original file is missing but the location window appears
with the original name of the file and lets me save it
sometimes. Very often I make 4-5 temp files before it
will save correctly.

I assume I have picked up a virus and would appreciate
any help to correct this problem.

Thanks

The temp files are named funny -- 8 characters of random digits/letters?

If yes, then something is interfering with the way excel saves a file.

When you save a file, excel saves it as a new name--that temp file.

If all goes well, it deletes the original file and renames that temp file to the
original's name.

If something goes bad, then then you've seen what can happen.

Two of the most common causes of this are the antivirus program itself and
network problems (permissions or even hardware). (I think you could probably
rule out permissions if it finally saves.)

Can you disable the antivirus (just temporarily) and see if that helps. If it
does, complain to your IT department to get a newer version (or better version).

If it doesn't, then see if saving to your local harddrive helps. If it does,
complain to your IT about the network.
