Save / Restore desktop?

I'm looking for a means of saving and restoring the desktop icons
(and their positions)for a particular user. I've discovered the DESKTOP
folders for "All Users" and individual users, and am thinking about
making backups of those, then copying them back in a STARTUP process
(probably a .BAT file that just copies them back). Is there a better
way of doing this outside of something like System Restore? TIA
