Can anyone explain why some workbooks will save a preview picture while
others will not?

I check the tickbox on the properties dialog, thn save the file. Some files
then show the preview while others do not. When I check the ones that fail,
the checkbox has been cleared.

Hi David

I think you misunderstood my post. The issue relates to the preview image,
not the filename.

Hi Ian,

Do you mean the thumbnail you see in the Explorer for a file.

I tried looking in system Help.
Start, Help, search:, preview picture

Followed those directions and the thumbname area on the left became
very large so I eliminated that view.

I also tried thumbnails but that was a view of all fo the files and was taking
a long time to generate and created a database file something like
thumbs.dbx

Looks like it is a folder option but I can't find anything.
I looked in my folder and there were excel files that show thumbnails
to the left of the file names one was from someone else and one
was mine the other 30 Excel file do not show a thumbnail. I opened
both of them and saved the one I had created and lost the thumbnail.

My Excel is 2000 and my operating system is Windows 2000,

I tried opening an Excel file with Internet Explorer and it generated
a separate HTML file, which had a thumbname, but did not generate
a thumbnail for the Excel file itself.

Sorry about previous response, it was to a different question, and explains
why my response was ignored rather than just being later than everyone else's.

Also sorry about making it look like you got an answer, what version
of Excel and Operating system.

Sorry, I didn't explain very well. The files in question are templates. When
I go to File - New, the dialog shows a Preview area to the right. It is this
preview image I am referring to.

Same as yours.

It's not a big issue as I know which file I need to open. It's just one of
those odd puzzles that would be nice to have an answer for, but isn't really
important.

Thanks for your input.

Hi Ian,
Okay, same picture as I see in Explorer, as you are referring to
when you create a new file (Ctrl+N)and you choose from a template.

some groups of templates were created with Titles and Previews,
the others were not created with preview. The General (tab) on the
new file window with preview has no title or preview and is the one
I use all the time. Just never paid any attention to Preview images.

In other words the authors or keepers of a group of templates
decided to have preview pictures or not. I don't see them mixed
within a group. But then I only have three groups of templates
"General" with one workbook named workbook,
"Spreadsheet Solutions" where the workbooks do not have previews,
"Business Planner Templates" that do have preview pictures.

From within Excel, File, properties, summary,
[x] Save preview picture, Title and other items optional.
As long as you save the file, each one I tried saved a preview
thumbnail.

I am the author of the affected templates.

[x] Save preview picture, Title and other items optional.

This I did with each of my templates. There are 11 in total of which only 5
retain the thumbnail. It's an odd one but, as I said, not really important
in the grand scheme of things.
As long as you save the file, each one I tried saved a preview
thumbnail.

Lucky you :-( I think I'll give up on this one. There are more important
things to occupy my time.

Thanks for trying
