Save my soul, DNS problem or Internet Explorer? on XP

L

LWyatt

Please help,

I have an interesting but frustrating problem
IE6 was working, now it's not!
For any url I get the page cannot be displayed, cannot find server or DNS
Error.
I've reset all IE6 settings under tools options
I've connect to several ISP's and get the same problem.
I've disabled my firewall,
I CAN connect to MSN Messenger, SMTP/POP3 for email works fine.
XP Home network tests, all pass ok.
I've reset my tcp/ip settings using the netsh int reset command - still no
joy

I would be very grateful for any assistance!

Can you ping the website by it's IP address?

eg
ping www.yahoo.com should resolve to one of these IPs adn you'll get a
reply:
216.109.118.67, 216.109.118.68, 216.109.118.66, 216.109.118.65
216.109.118.64, 216.109.118.74, 216.109.118.77, 216.109.118.76

If you cannot ping it by IP, then it's a network config issue on your
machine. If you can ping by IP, then it's either a firewall setting, a
personal firewall installed (other than the default ICF), a Proxy setting in
your IE options, or an MTU setting with your router/modem. If using ADSL,
the MTU issue is common.

I'm going to assume you can ping if you say MSN works. So that leads me to
think either Proxy setting or MTU.

Hi!!
If you can ping www.domain.com, even if ICMP is blocked, you get the
IPaddress back, then DNS is working correctly, as it sounds it is. I would
post this to the APPLICATIONS news groups as they are more familiar with
Tshooting Internet Explorer issues.

Thank you,
