Save .gif file as string

How can I save the string representation of a .gif file to a string
variable? I have code that creates a .rtf from some string variables and I
want to include a picture. I want some way to save the picture to a
variable so that I do not have to include the 100's of lines on numbers in
my code and so the picture can be easily changed.
