Save function adds a 1 to the end of a file name

When re saving a previously saved work sheet eg. xyz work sheet 1 and using the save as function, an additional 1 appears at the end of the file name automatically eg. xyz work sheet 11. If you save again, it adds another 1 and so on. To prevent this, I have to manually change the file name and take off the additional 1 each time. By the way, this does not happen to all worksheets, just some of them. Why is this so?
