Save Error

If I have a vlookup() formula that is looking up data in another spreadsheet
and then save the file, I get this error:
"Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data
or close other applications." Then when I clear that error message, I get
this one:
"Unable to save external Link Values." But the file seems to then save
okay. If I comment out the exteranl vlookup() function, the file saves fine.
Any ideas how to keep the vlookup but avoid the error messages?

Does it help to uncheck Tools > Options > Calculation > Save external
link values ?

That solves the problem. So what is the down side of doing this? It sounds
to me like there is not a problem with doing this, it saves time and space
when opening the document. Is there a down side?

If you open the workbook without the source workbook being accessible
then it won't be able to recompute formulas accessing the linked data.
