Save as web page then publish ---> in use message???

G

Guest

Wonder why the following is happening.

(1) Open (PPT) > file > save as > file type - web page > save
(2) While the presentation is still open, file > save as > file type still
showing web page > publish > publish again, say yes to replace.

Then following message displays:-

"xxxxx.htm is currently in use. PowerPoint can't modify it at this time."

I can understand that the ppt file is in use, but not the htm. Is it
because the htm is pointing to ppt? If I do a close between (1) and (2), the
above message won't appear.

Any comments?

This is by design. When you save as a web page PowerPoint now believes that
the file is now an htm file. If you just save then you would not get the
message. But because your using the save as and saving as a web page using
the same filename PowerPoint won't let you create what it thinks is a new
file over the one that is currently open.

Michael,

Thank you for your response. I realize that .mht behaves the same way. I
also noticed one more thing. When I go to file menu and click save as web
page, the default is .mht and not .htm.

By the way, Michael, I don't feel comfortable (in fact I'm kind of
"nervous") about using Outlook Express for both newsgroup posts and e-mail
messages. I am concerned that I post a personal e-mail to the newsgroup
accidentally. Can you imagine that I type a personal e-mail after clicking
message, new message without realizing that I am still on the newsgroup side
and hit the send button accidentally. I can't deactivate the send button and
I can't force myself to input the newsgroup name. I have to undo the habit
of using the message button and use the create button instead.

Doesn't matter what you save it as. If you use Save As twice in a row on the
same file using the parameters your going to receive the "I can't do that
message"

It has only been the last couple version where the MHT extension has been
added. I consider that to be an archive file extension, as it put everything
into one file, which has to be downloaded before the viewer can see it. The
htm version just downloads the files for each slide as needed a lot easier
if your still on dial up.

I would not be concerned about using Outlook Express for both your regular
mail and newsgroup When your in the newsgroup, When your creating a new
post or replying to the group the interface is altogether different than
when your initiating or replying to an email. I would make sure that in the
newsgroup your reply to address is bogus, that way you will not receive any
unwanted email traffic.

Continuation of my last post

Regarding OE concern, my best bet right now is to deactivate "send
immediately." Just want to let you know my concern and solution. Thanks for
reading.

I think that's a good solution, Epinn. I know I've posted to the group
messages intended to be emails. (Not often, but I have done it.) Luckily I
didn't say anything embarrassing in them! :)

Echo,

Thank you so much for sharing. You have no idea how much your post means to
me. I have talked to quite a few people and nobody understood my concern;
you are the only one who experienced what I almost did. I have already typed
up a few e-mail messages while I am still in the newsgroup phase.
Fortunately, I didn't hit the send button. I know the toolbars are
different, but when someone like me who is used to message > new message, it
can be problematic. Now, I have to unlearn this habit and use the create
button for e-mails.

Cheers,

Epinn

Any comments?

PowerPoint has a habit of hanging onto files long past the time it has any
reason to do so, though in this case there's a bit more of a reason ... when
you've saved as a web page, the current presentation, as far as PPT is
concerned, IS the HTML version of the file (look at the title bar, for example

There's not much to be done about it, other than what you've already done.

By the way, Michael, I don't feel comfortable (in fact I'm kind of
"nervous") about using Outlook Express for both newsgroup posts and e-mail
messages.

You can always use a different program for either function.
OE can't read or send email if you don't define any email accounts for it.

If you prefer to use OE for email, try another newsreader app instead. Some web
browsers have passable newsreaders built in. Opera does mail, news, RSS feeds
and more.
