Save as DBF 4

I have a Excel file which has 145 fields. I saved it as DBF4 format
using Excel 2003. When I am trying to open the created DBF table, it throws
an error calling "Table has become corrupted. The table will not to be
repaired before using again.". I removed 3 fields from the excel file and
again tried same procedure. Then the table is created and opens without
throwing any error. Now the DBF table's Length is 3999. I think we can
create DBF using Excel 2003 up to table length 3999.
Why does this happen?
