Satellite tracking

Anyone know of free software that will identify a satellite (seen when out
walking the dog after dusk) ? I Googled for something suitable but the
available stuff all seems to require you to identify the satellite first
before they predict the times/locations of appearances. I want to do it the
other way round i.e. find out the name of the satellite from a sighting.

An online app would do if there is no suitable freeware.

ORBITRON: http://www.stoff.pl

you only have to configure the program once with your local observer
position, download the most *actual* TLE data (downloadable at the same
URL) and finally back home after your satellite observations remembering
the date/time/celestial orientation (~ direction, high) and within
ORBITRON (simulation status!) and the given date/time of your
observation(s) you will see the satellite(s) name(s) and many data about
the concerning the satellite(s).

Have fun.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but xplanet is very cool
for this type thing.

Take a look at http://xplanet.sourceforge.net for some screenshots. I
personally use the following command line to start it up:

Sorry about that, seems that the cut-n-paste didn't work. Here is my
command-line:

"C:\Program Files\Xplanet\xplanet.exe" -config mike -font Arial.ttf
-proj rect -label -fontsize 12 -origin sun -wait 900
