Greg

I just bought a new system that I'm piecing together. I have a giga-byte
8knxp REV 2.0 motherboard, and a WD 160gig SATA hd. I got windows xp pro to
load, but when trying to install the motherboard drivers I have a problem
with the SiI 3112 SATARaid controller. It shows up in the device manager as
a ??. When I install the driver, and reboot windows it comes up with the
Windows XP PRO screen with the dots running across the bottom of the screen
and then just freezes. When it gets to that screen the drive light doesn't
even come on. Then the dots freeze and I have to reboot. I then am told
windows didn't load properly, and I elect to go back to the previously
working state. I have an almost identical system that I built 3 months ago
with no problems with this. My SiI 3112 SATARaid controller works fine with
all the updates... in fact I just loaded the newest one from MSFT windows
update today (driver dated may 7th, 2004). I tried installing this one on
my new computer with the same freezes. Any help out there?

Thanks.

Are you implying that you have RAID functioning on a single disk system?

Please provide more detail.

For example, if you have only one HDD, then you must set your BIOS state to BASE and not RAID for the drivers and raid setup to function correctly and so that Windows setup will proceed and complete.

Windows will require the driver disk to be inserted during the first phase of setup in order that it can recognise and use the SATA drive. At the point when you are propted to press F6 to install a SCSI device driver.

I have used Giga-Byte and WD disk in this combination several times and not yet had probs.

"BAR", you seem to know a bit about SATA.

Do you know whether it is possible to use Powerquest Drive Image 7.0 or 2002
to perform a complete OS 'Copy Drives' transfer from a normal IDE drive to a
SATA drive on the same PC?
I'm receiving plenty of 'can't do' advice on this & to date have had no joy
from Symantec.

I do not know about Powerquest but with the MaxBlast (Maxtor) CD it is
possible to copy from IDE to SATA, IDE to IDE or SATA to SATA. I copy from
SATA to SATA without any difficulty using this CD. I used to use Ghost but
it didn't work anymore once I tried copying SATA drives. It couldn't see
the SATA drives.

Boot up to the MaxBlast CD and choose the option for copying partition to
partition.

Hope this helps.
