I understand that XP prior to SP2 will not recognize a drive greater than
137GB correctly.

I have prepared and finalized a slipstreamed combo of XP and SP2,

BUT (given that my last attempt to use a slipstreamed cd failed part way in
to the install)

If I have, say, a 160gb drive and install to it with XP basic, and then
update it to SP2, will it THEN recognize it as a 160gb drive, or is it
forever grotesque?

THANKS!

It should recognise the disk, and show unused space, which will enable you
to partition / format the free space. However it has been said that there is
a theoretic possibility of a large hd been formated in pre sp, in which the
free space is later formated after the sp is updated could lead to
corruption
Autostreamer is one why of slipstreaming.

XP prior to SP1 will not recognize a drive greater than 137GB correctly.

After installing SP1 or SP2, you can use the space above 137 GB, but not
added to the 137 GB in one partition.

Either SP1 or SP2 supports 48bit LBA, however your PC's BIOS must also
support 48Bit LBA to go beyond 137GB.

Others have answered your specific question, but I wanted to clarify that
the above isn't quite correct. It's at least *SP1* that's required, not SP2.

Kristi:
I believe the other responders to your query have probably answered you but
perhaps just to make it a trifle clearer...

First of all, your ABIT motherboard supports large-capacity disks so there's
no problem there.

As you apparently understand, if you install the XP OS not including SP1 or
SP2, only (roughly) 127 GB of your 160 GB (actually about 149 GB) will be
recognized by the OS.

When you subsequently install SP2 the entire disk capacity (again, about 149
GB) will be recognized, but the remaining disk space above 127 GB will be
considered "unallocated space", disk space that you can subsequently
partition/format using XP's Disk Management utility (Start >
right-click My Computer > Manage > Computer Management > Disk Management).
But note that this disk space will be a *second* partition on your HDD. The
only way to create a single partition (without using a third-party program)
comprising the entire contents of your 160 GB (149 GB) HDD would have been
to install XP onto that new HDD after upgrading the OS to SP2. Now, of
course, if you can live with two partitions on your HDD - one about 127 GB
and the other about 22 GB -then there's no problem.

So all things considered it probably would be best to create a slipstreamed
XP/SP2 installation CD. I believe someone recommended the AutoStreamer
program (it's a freebie) to perform the slipstreaming operation. It's a very
nice program that's relatively easy to use. See
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/slipstream.htm for step-by-step
instructions.

Thanks hugely to all!!!!!

Thanks Ken - yeah, as I was writing that I thought it might be SP1! :o)

The caveats about it not being a single partition are absolutely no problem
for me - even Vista only needs about 40-80gb for its root. I prefer smaller
partitions for easy backing up to DVD with Ghost.

Hopefully I won't get to try my slipstreamed CD as I am planning on simply
dropping a ghosted image from my working IDE boot down onto the SATA drive
and booting from there, figuring that it will probably ask me to activate
again, since it always checks the drive and type.

Anna, I did go look at that and will try it if my CD doesn't work. I think my
previous failure was due to it being a non-finalized burn, though.

Again, thanks hugely for everyone's thoughts!!!

What I actually get depends entrely on what newegg has at the moment I go for
it! :o)
