There are several things that you need to do:
1. Is the SATA on a RAID controller? (Mine is with an ASUS P4S8X
motherboard.) If so, you need to build a RAID arary. You say you do not
want RAID? Well, neither did I, but depending on the motherboard, you may
have no choice. I played a while, then re-read the motherboard manual and
realized that the custom options for my RAID controller allowed me to build
a RAID array containing only one disk. Until I did this, even the disk
preparation software that came with the disk could not see the disk. Look
for a message after the BIOS checks about hitting some key to get into the
RAID setup, distinct from the BUIOS setup. After I built the array I could
see the disk, partition and format it.
2. When installing XP, look for a small message about hittinf F6 for
third-party drivers, like RAID and SCSI. SATA is in this same category, but
not explicitly listed. The drivers must be on a floppy. A CD will not
work. If the drivers came on a CD, then copy them to a floppy. Copy all
files related to SATA, not just the INF type files. I struggled until I
realized that a dumb files called "txtsetup.oem" was required on the root of
the floppy. The SATA drivers come from the motherboard maker, not the disk
maker. As always, check for updates before installing what happened to come
on the CD.
Good luck.
