Sata II versus Sata I blues

High All

I have encountered a serious problem with one of PC's in this household :(

The old 36gb WD Raptor sata I has decided to quit service and I have ordered
a
new 160 gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.9
A backstep I know but the Raptor was too big a mouthfull for my wallet

The new disk is Sata II but should be backward compatible with Sata I, hmmm

Here goes
Having the new disk as the secondary drive everything is fine and dandy -
except I can't boot on it being secondary
If the new drive is the first harddrive the darn thing won't read from the
disk - any disks - not even the DVD drives

I have tried adding the jumper to limit throughput to to 1.5Mb but to no
avail

What to do? - Other than buy a new (maybe ide) disk?
The mobo is an Intel 865Perl thing - rather "old" :)

Argghh - thanks for yout patience and hopefully some assistance

Are you still able to make the computer work ?
Will it boot into Windows, and are all entries in
Device Manager normal ?

A weakness on your motherboard, is the Southbridge chip.

I would suggest the use of a PCI disk controller card, if I
thought it would help. But there could be other hardware
problems that might only show up once the system is booted.
I would first try to get into Windows, and test the hardware
in the board as best as you can, to determine whether
the motherboard needs to be repaired under warranty.

Have you tried the old Raptor on another computer ? Perhaps
the Raptor is not really broken, and this is a motherboard
issue ?

Without the disk attached the PC is booting on the CD drive
If I delete all partitions the PC is also booting

Unfortunately the old system disk is failing seriously now
Hmm story goes for Asus board, mine is an Intel, but you never now :(
The PC has been working for two and a half year - give and take a little

I'll see about it, will the PC be able to boot on the Sata Card?
Probably :)

I have been copying data over on another PC, the raptor is dying

Thanks/Peter
